AZUSA, Calif. – After completing its trip up North, Azusa Pacific returned home to play in its first of five upcoming home games to close out the 2024 volleyball season. However, it was a spoiled return as the Cougars fell 0-3 to Chaminade, who remains undefeated in PacWest play.
With the loss, the Cougars move to 13-10 this season, including a 9-7 record in Conference.
How it Happened: The Cougars kept it close in the first set, giving a tough battle to the nationally-ranked Silverswords to a 15-15 tie. However, Chaminade responded with an 8-3 run to close out the set, winning 25-18.
In the second set, Chaminade came out firing, quickly taking a 7-1 lead with five consecutive kills. The Cougars fought back with some powerful kills of their own, but the Silverswords continued to dominate, pulling away for a 25-17 win.
Azusa Pacific fought hard to stay alive in the third set by opening with a 7-5 lead. But Chaminade responded with a nine-point run to take control, 14-7. The Cougars made a brief push, sparked by three straight kills from
Sarah Wilson which allowed them to narrow the gap to 15-19. Yet, the Silverswords finished strong, closing out the match with a 25-18 win to complete the sweep.
By the Numbers: The hitting percentage this match was rather lopsided, with Azusa Pacific finishing at .241, while Chaminade posted an impressive .457. Chaminade also led with 53 kills to Azusa Pacific's 32.
Sarah Wilson led the team with 11 kills while
Kendyl MacAskill finished with 10.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific will look to bounce back with another match this week against Hawai'i Pacific on Friday. The game will take place in the Felix Event Center with a 2:00 pm start time.
