Clean Sheet Leads to Draw in Azusa

Azusa Pacific women’s soccer picked up a 0-0 draw against Westmont in a non-conference match on Saturday evening.

AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific earned a scoreless draw against Westmont in a non-conference match at the Cougar Soccer Complex on Saturday evening. The Cougars outshot Westmont 11-5 and also collected four shots on goals compared to the Warriors one. Avery Guiel collected three of those shots on goal and Maddie Williams earned one save in the net to preserve the clean sheet, her 4th of the season.

"In the first half I thought we moved the ball really well." said head coach Brooke Lincoln. "We couldn't find a rhythm in the second half, but we're still creating chances and we have dangerous players that have had several good looks on goal, its just putting the ball in the back of the net."

How it Happened: Azusa Pacific maintained majority possession in the first half, seeing a few chances in the later minutes. In the 33rd minute Hailey Hilton nailed a shot that missed just high and Angela Cipriano's shot hit the woodwork just three minutes later to keep the game scoreless heading into the half.

More opportunities opened for the Cougars on their attacking half in the final 45 minutes. In the 51st minute, Guiel drove up the side of the field and fought off a defender in the box but her low shot was saved by the Warriors goalkeeper. Just four minutes later, Guiel had the same breakaway attempt, but the Westmont goalkeeper came up with another save to keep the Cougars at bay.

The Warriors then pressed on their attacking half, sending the ball up field but Williams came up with a great save despite a collision with a Westmont player.

In the 76th minute, a free kick opportunity arose for the Cougars at the top of the box when Katie Prado sent the ball to Rilee Bradbury who passed it out wide to Bethany Tee. Tee's shot missed just high to keep the game tied 0-0.

In the final minutes, Guiel had another opportunity up the side of the field, but the Westmont goalkeeper came up with a diving save to halt the Cougars attack. That was all for the Cougars and Warriors after 90 minutes of play, finishing the non-conference match in a 0-0 draw.

Up Next: Azusa Pacific will travel to Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday, September 27th for their last non-conference match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and if you cannot attend the match, you can watch HERE.
