AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific women's soccer battled in an intense match against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, but the Cougars ultimately fell to the Broncos 0-2.Â
"We gave up the goal early in the first half, but I'm proud of the way the girls responded after the goal and in the second half." said head coach Brooke Lincoln. "I felt like we created two or three really good chances at goal, but it was the finish that wasn't quite good enough for what we needed at the moment." Lincoln continued, "In the next week, I'm looking for us to take a solid step forward and I'm expecting us to go up to the Bay Area and compete."
How it Happened: In just the fourth minute of the game, Cal Poly Pomona found the back of the net, giving the Broncos an early 1-0 lead. Despite the early deficit, the Cougars pressed down field and Aubrey Dunaway saw two shots on goal in the 14th and 17th minute, but the Broncos goalie came up with both saves for Cal Poly Pomona's side.Â
In the 28th minute, Cal Poly Pomona capitalized on another offensive opportunity, denting the twine for the second time in the first half, giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead. The Cougars had a free kick opportunity near the end of the first 45, but Katie Prado's shot was saved, sending Azusa Pacific to the half trailing 2-0.Â
The Cougars offensive press was more efficient in the second half, taking five shots on goal in 27 minutes compared to the Broncos zero. Despite the pressure that Azusa Pacific was applying on their attacking half late in the game, it was not enough to overcome the deficit and the Cougars fell 0-2.Â
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific spent 61% of the game on their attacking half while the Cougars had six shots on goal compared to the Broncos three. The loss moves Azusa Pacific's record with Cal Poly Pomona to 7-13 all-time and 4-6 at the Cougar Soccer Complex.Â
Up Next: The Cougars will travel to the Bay Area to face Sonoma State Thursday, September 7th at 11:30 a.m., and Cal State East Bay on Saturday, September 9th at 2:00 p.m.Â
