Cougars Come Up Short Against #2 Team in the Nation

Azusa Pacific men’s soccer fell 2-0 at #2 Cal State Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Azusa Pacific fell to #2 Cal State Los Angeles on the road Tuesday evening by a final score of 2-0. Six different Cougars had a shot on goal compared to the Golden Eagles four in the match.

How it Happened: Both sides were pressing offensively throughout the half as both back lines saw tons of action through the first 45 minutes. In the 10th minute, Zedan Mutlu had an opportunity to give the Cougars the lead, but his shot was saved by the Golden Eagles goalkeeper. It was Cal State Los Angeles who delivered the first goal of the match, taking advantage of a set piece in the 29th minute and taking a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Gabriel Oropeza collected the Cougars second shot on goal, but the Cal State Los Angeles goalkeeper delivered once again. The Golden Eagles would double its lead in the 70th minute, when a breakaway allowed Cal State Los Angeles to get the ball past the diving Leo Moreno to give themselves a 2-0 lead.

Four more shots on goal came from the Cougars in the final 11 minutes, but the Golden Eagles defense stayed composed and prevented the Cougars from finding the back of the net in the match, despite a gritty effort from Azusa Pacific. After 90 minutes of play, it was the Golden Eagles who had a 2-0 edge as they handed the Cougars their second loss of the season.
