Esther Conde-Turpin competed at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest last week, as she competed for Team France during two days of competition in the heptathlon. Conde-Turpin placed 18th overall, scoring 5,256 points. Three fouls in the long jump prevented her from breaking 6,100 points.
Azusa Pacific track & field head coach Jack Hoyt was out in Budapest for the Championships to coach Conde-Turpin. "The meet had some ups and downs, but Esther finished strong with a personal best in the 800 meters," said Hoyt, "It was a great experience for her and she represented Azusa Pacific really well. Next year's goal will be a top eight finish at the Olympics." Her time in the 800 meters was 2:11.23 seconds.
Conde-Turpin earned a spot at the World Championships after she became the French national champion in the heptathlon this summer, as she finished atop the podium with 6,182 points at the 2023 Championnats de France Elite (French National Championships) in late July.Â
While Conde-Turpin has not yet qualified for the 2024 Olympics in Paris next summer, she still has the chance to earn a spot. "If she does not have the automatic standard by next July (6,480 points), she will need to be ranked in the top 24," said Hoyt, "That was the situation this year for the World Championships as well, which is why we did not know she was going to the World Championships until two weeks before the competition. So, ideally, she will try to hit the standard next year for the Olympics, but likely an average score over two heptathlons of 6,200 would qualify her."
In her first season at Azusa Pacific this past spring, Conde-Turpin broke the 60 meter hurdles record (8.27 seconds), the 100 meter hurdles record (13.14 seconds), and her school-record heptathlon score of 6,007 points that she set at the Bryan Clay Invitational, is the second-best heptathlon score in NCAA Division II history. Conde-Turpin was an All-American in four events (2x indoor, 2x outdoor), which helped lead the Cougars to the program's second NCAA outdoor national title in the last three years.
