GLENDORA, Calif - Azusa Pacific dropped its final home game of the regular season, losing to San Diego State by a 14-4 score. The Cougars are now 14-9 overall, and 2-4 in GCC action.
How It Happened: The game started out as well as it could have, as the Cougars scored barely 10 seconds into action. It was a pair of seniors, who were honored in a pregame ceremony for Senior Day alongside
Melissa Valdez, that connected on the opening goal when
Kyra Kahahawai found a wide open
Shyanne Rainey who buried the ball into the back of the net for a quick 1-0 lead.Â
The Cougar advantage would last for nearly three minutes, until the Aztecs struck for their first goal of the game to tie the score at 1-1. San Diego State would take their first lead of the game with 53 seconds to play in the opening period, and the Aztecs never looked back as they never surrendered the lead for the remainder of the contest.
While the Cougars had a fairly strong defensive first half to limit the Aztecs to just three goals in the first and two in the second, they could not supply the offensive firepower to keep pace with San Diego State, which exploded for 11 second half goals. Azusa Pacific scored just one goal in each of the four periods.
By the Numbers: San Diego State went 14-for-38 shooting (.368), while the Cougars were 4-for-36 (.111). While the Cougars were able to draw 13 exclusions, they were unable to capitalize on any of their power play opportunities. Shyanna Rainey had a team-high two goals, while Kahahawai finished with two assists.
Up Next: The Cougars will close out the regular season next Saturday, when they visit GCC-opponent Pacific. Currently, the Cougars are sixth in the conference standings with the GCC conference tournament looming (April 28-30).Â
