A Tale of 2 Games

Azusa Pacific's offense feasts in game one, held to two hits in game two.

LA MIRADA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific settled for a split with rival Biola on Friday afternoon, as the Cougars won game one by a 13-5 score, but were shutout 5-0 in the second game to snap a three-game winning streak. The Cougars are now 24-17, with a 16-10 conference record.

GAME ONE: Azusa Pacific 13, Biola 5

The Cougars scored in six of their nine turns at the plate, recording their second most hits in a game this season with 16. After Omar Lopez drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, the Eagles would score three in the bottom of the first. The host's lead would be short-lived, as Azusa Pacific brought five runs in to score in the top of the second.

The Cougars' first run of the second inning came by way of an Eagles' error, and then Cameron Lee stepped to the plate and launched a two-run home run for his third of the season, putting the Cougars up 4-3. Two batters later, Lopez hit a solo shot for his 11th homer of the campaign, making it 5-3 Cougars. After Spencer Rasmussen followed Lopez' home run with a double, Rasmussen was driven in on a double from Will Medina to make it 6-3.

A few innings later in the fourth, Medina would bring in another run for the Cougars, as he hit an RBI single to center field that brought the score to a 7-4 ballgame, and in the top of the sixth inning, Medina came through yet again, doubling down the right field line to score Lopez, who had led off the inning with a single.

Azusa Pacific would add more to its lead in the seventh and ninth innings, as the Cougars put up crooked numbers in both frames. In the seventh, runs were scored by way of a two-RBI single from Rasmussen, and Medina drove in his fourth RBI of the game on a single. Medina was not done yet, as he hit an RBI triple in the ninth, and Lopez had a sacrifice fly as well in the inning.

Medina finished 5-for-6 with five RBI, as he continues to make the most of his recent insertion into the starting lineup. Medina's first start of the season was on April 1 at Point Loma, and since then, he has gone 14-for-30 (.466 ba) with eight RBI, two doubles, a triple and a home run. Medina has had at least one hit in seven of his eight starts, and he is currently on a six-game hitting streak.

Lopez went 3-for-3 in the game, driving in three RBI, scoring four runs, and drawing a walk. Rasmussen also had three hits in the game, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Cade Marshman was the third Cougar with a multi-hit performance, as he finished 2-for-5.

On the hill, Alfredo Frey earned the win, as he improved his record to 3-0 with three scoreless innings of relief work in the fourth, fifth and sixth. He then handed the ball off to Brendon Cannings to pitch the final three innings, and Cannings earned his second save of the season after he held the Eagles hitless and scoreless during his appearance.

GAME TWO: Biola 5, Azusa Pacific 0 (7 inn.)

After the Cougars would tally their second-most hits of the season in game one, they were held to their second-fewest in game two, mustering just two hits. Biola generated three runs in the bottom of the second, and added a run in the third and in the fifth inning for all the offense it would need to secure the win.

Abraham Carrillo suffered the loss on the mound as the Cougars' starter, giving up four runs over three innings of work. Korey Shepard pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing just one run on three hits. Both Carrillo and Shepard struck out three batters in the contest.

Up Next: The two teams will be back in action tomorrow, with a doubleheader in Azusa scheduled to start at 2:00 pm at the Cougar Baseball Complex. Game one will be a nine inning affair, with a seven inning game to follow.
