Sharks Take Two Over Cougars

Azusa Pacific fell to Hawai’i Pacific in both games of the doubleheader today in Hawai’i.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Azusa Pacific was swept on Thursday, with Hawai'i Pacific claiming a 4-2 victory in game one, and a 5-2 win in the second game.

GAME ONE: Hawai'i Pacific 4, Azusa Pacific 2

Azusa Pacific got the scoring started early as the Cougars were able to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Ally Chin led things off with a hit by pitch and Sommer Quinones moved her over with a SAC bunt. Izzy Rivera then singled to right to score Chin, followed by a single by Bella Fraser to bring across another run.

Hawai'i Pacific responded in the bottom of the 5th when a double by the Sharks followed by an RBI groundout tied the game at two a-piece.

The Sharks took the lead in the bottom of the 6th when a single up the middle scored two off Liz Phillips who came on in relief of Sydnie Sahhar. A double play ended Hawai'i Pacific's threat and sent the Cougars up to the plate in the top of the seventh.

Three quick outs from the Sharks ended the game and Azusa Pacific took the 4-2 loss. The Cougars had seven hits on the game, with Chin providing the only multi-hit game, but left eight runners on base compared to the Sharks four.

GAME TWO: Hawai'i Pacific 5, Azusa Pacific 2

The second game was a pitching duel till the top of the fourth inning, when the Cougars broke through and provided the first hit of the game off Carley Gay's bat. Rivera then followed with a hit by pitch, but Azusa Pacific was not able to bring a run across in the inning.

Hawai'i Pacific took advantage of a bases loaded situation in their half of the fifth with a bases clearing double to take a 3-0 lead. Another single by the Sharks brought across another run in the inning to bring the score to 4-0. Phillips then came on in relief of Korstrom and another single by Hawai'i Pacific allowed them to earn a 5-0 scoring margin over the Cougars.

That was all the scoring that the Sharks had as Phillips then provided two scoreless innings. The Cougars bats came alive in the top of the seventh when Korstrom sent her second home run of the season over the left field fence to cut the deficit to four. A double by Mia Alvarez and a wild pitch allowed her to get to third and an error by the Sharks third baseman brought across another run. This was all the scoring that Azusa Pacific could provide as a groundout ended the threat and the Cougars suffered the 5-2 loss.

Azusa Pacific was held to just three hits in the second game leaving five runners on base.
