Softball Gets Swept

Cougars unable to hold narrow lead in game one, drop both games to Hawai’i Pacific.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Azusa Pacific's softball team played their final games on O'ahu for the season Friday afternoon, dropping the third game of their series with Hawai'i Pacific by a 7-3 final before falling 6-2 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Hawai'i Pacific 7, Azusa Pacific 3

Both teams' offenses were quiet in the early innings, though Katie Korstrom kept matching zeros on the scoreboard, getting out of a two-on, one-out jam in the second with a pair of ground ball fielder's choices and stranding four Sharks on base through the first three innings.  Izzy Rivera got a hit with one out in the fourth.  Korstrom then doubled to right center, and Rivera was able to score when the relay throw was bobbled, allowing the Cougars to get on the board first.  Hawai'i Pacific got the tying run to second with one out in the fifth, but Korstrom coolly induced a popup, then a batter's interference call ended the inning.

Hawai'i Pacific would finally break through in the sixth inning, putting two on with one out and leveling the score on a fielder's choice when the throw home was not in time.  That was followed with a two-run single up the middle to break the 1-1 tie.  Two more two-out hits and a walk resulted in four unearned runs, allowing the Sharks to plate seven runs in the inning altogether.

Caitlin DeCanio got the Cougars a pair of runs in the seventh with a pinch-hit single, but that was as close as the Cougars would get.  Korstrom had a pair of hits and an RBI to help her own cause in a losing effort.

GAME TWO:  Hawai'i Pacific 6, Azusa Pacific 2

The Sharks struck quickly, with a leadoff home run down the line in left field in the bottom of the first.  The threat continued, with a second run coming around on a wild pitch to put the Sharks up 2-0 after one.  Hawai'i Pacific would double that advantage in the second inning, stringing together a walk, three consecutive singles, and a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Azusa Pacific would finally scratch a run across the plate in the fourth inning, with Korstrom again doubling home Rivera, just as she had in game one.  But the Cougars were unable to come any closer, and the Sharks would answer back with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.  The Cougars would load the bases in the sixth and get one run back via a Mia Alvarez single, but that was all the scoring in the game.

Korstrom again had two hits to lead the way for the Cougars offensively, while Liz Phillips pitched the final five innings in relief.

Up Next:  Azusa Pacific (10-11, 2-6 PacWest) will look to right the ship on their flight to the big island, as they will complete their road trip with a four-game series against Hawai'i Hilo.  The first doubleheader will start on Monday at 12:00 noon Hawaiian Standard Time (3:00 p.m. Pacific) and live stats will be available HERE.
