Debutants Highlight Sweep

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific cruised to a third win in a row against PacWest opponents, beating Holy Names 7-0 without dropping a set on Tuesday afternoon at the Cougar Tennis Complex.

Just a day after a tight battle with NCAA Division I Ball State, two Cougars made their season debut with Kylie Hull and Hannah Mulbarger being entered into the lineup, and both made winning debuts. Azusa Pacific improves to 9-3 on the season with the win.

The Cougars swept doubles with only two games lost in three sets. Eleonora Liga and Madison Kane won 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, improving to 23-4 over the last two years with eight wins in a row. Katia Betancourt and April Wong then clinched the doubles point with their own 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Miruna Tudor had her fourth different partner this year, and won with Hull at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, to complete the doubles sweep.

In singles, Vini Bautista and Katherine Nguyen both entered the lineup and raced to quick wins. Bautista finished first with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 performance at No. 2 singles. Then Nguyen won by the exact same score at No. 3 singles to start a new winning streak just a day after her historic 23-match winning streak was snapped.

Then, reigning PacWest Player of the Week Liga won 6-0, 7-5 for her eighth win in a row at No. 1 singles to clinch the win.

Betancourt had the longest match of the day in singles and came through a tough second-set tiebreak for a 6-2, 7-6(6) win. Shannele Lopez played in her second match of the year, entering the lineup in the No. 6 singles spot, where she earned her first win, 6-0, 6-2.

Mulbarger completed the 7-0 sweep for Azusa Pacific, winning her debut 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. She is the ninth Cougar this season to earn a singles win.

Azusa Pacific stays busy with its fifth match in seven days on Wednesday as the Cougars host Barry. The Bucs are currently ranked No. 1 in the nation and the new rankings will be released on the same day as the match.
