HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Azusa Pacific completed the four-game sweep of Hawai'i Pacific on Tuesday afternoon, winning both games of the doubleheader. The Cougars are 11-7 overall, and 4-0 in conference action.
GAME ONE: Azusa Pacific 12, Hawai'i Pacific 5
After the Cougars put up 24 runs during Monday's doubleheader, their bats stayed hot to bring across another 12 runs in game one. The scoring started for Azusa Pacific in the top of the first, when Casey O'Laughlin laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Cade Marshman, who started the game off with a single.Â
After Hawai'i Pacific took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, the Cougars regained the advantage in the top of the third, scoring three runs in the frame. O'Laughlin had an RBI sacrifice fly, and two wild pitches brought home Cougar baserunners to make it 4-2. Azusa Pacific's lead grew to 6-2 in the top of the fifth, as a throwing error by the Sharks allowed two runs to score.
While the Cougar pitching staff continued to keep the Sharks at bay, Azusa Pacific drove in five runs in the eighth for an 11-2 lead. The Cougars' scoring in the eighth came by way of a sacrifice fly by Tyus Santa Anna, RBI singles from Jeffrey Castillo and Marshman, and a two-run single by Will Stroud.
Hawai'i Pacific would bring two runs home in the bottom of the eighth, but that would be all of the offense it could muster, and Spencer Rasmussen tacked on another run for the Cougars in the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly.
Marshman, Stroud and Castillo each finished with two hits in the game, and Marshman came around to score four times.Â
Brendan Dixon started on the mound for the Cougars and improved his record to 2-0, as he threw four and two thirds inning, allowing just one earned run, while striking out three batters. Alfredo Frey pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief work, and Michael Gill threw the final two innings of the game, allowing just one earned run.
GAME TWO: Azusa Pacific 5, Hawai'i Pacific 3 (7 innings)
As it had been done in the three previous games of the series, Azusa Pacific put up a run in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on a Sharks fielding error that allowed O'Laughlin (doubled earlier in the inning) to score from second. The Cougars would increase the lead to 4-0 in the third inning, behind an RBI double from Lopez, followed by a two-RBI single from Rasmussen.Â
The Sharks would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs to make it 4-2, but a wild pitch in the top of the fourth put the Cougars ahead 5-2.Â
Lopez and Rasmussen had two hits apiece to lead the Cougars offense, while Carson Collett was able to draw two walks.Â
Joey Frey pitched his way to the first victory of his Cougar career, as the freshman started the game and went four innings, surrendering just two earned runs. Andrew White was called upon to pitch the fifth and sixth (2 H, 1 ER, 1 K), and he then handed the ball off to Jake Vargas in the seventh, who sat the Sharks down in order to earn his second save this season.
Up Next: The Cougars will have the next three days off before starting a four-game series on Saturday (March 11) at Hawai'i Hilo. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, and another doubleheader on Monday (March 13).
