HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Azusa Pacific opened its twelve-game PacWest road trip to Hawai'i on Monday with a doubleheader against Chaminade. The Cougars fell in game one by a 1-0 score, while the second game was suspended due to darkness, but resumed Tuesday morning and Azusa Pacific was able to pick up a 3-2 extra inning victory.
GAME ONE: Chaminade 1, Azusa Pacific 0Â
The first game was a pitching duel between the Cougars and Silverswords as no team was able to produce a run until the 9th inning of play. Starting pitcher Katie Korstrom threw six scoreless innings, but Chaminade threatened multiple times, putting up eight hits.Â
Azusa Pacific had an opportunity to score in the top of the fifth, when a single from Sommer Quinones put the Cougars in a position to score, but a play at the plate kept the game scoreless. In another attempt to cross home after a single to center field, the Silverswords threw out another Azusa Pacific runner at home in the top of the 8th to keep the score even at 0 a-piece.
Liz Phillips came on in relief of Korstrom in the sixth and was able to limit any damage from Chaminade until the bottom of the ninth inning when four singles allowed the Silverswords to touch home and hand the Cougars a 1-0 loss.Â
GAME TWO: AZUSA PACIFIC 3, Chaminade 2
Chaminade got on the board quick in the bottom of the first, but Azusa Pacific responded in their half of the third when Sierra Sandoval singled to start the inning and a double by Carley Gay put runners on second and third. A single by Bella Fraser allowed Sandoval to score and gave the Cougars their first run of the day, tying the game at 1-1.
The Silverswords would take the lead right back in their half of the third, but the Cougars were able to push another run across in the top of the sixth due to an error by Chaminade. Sydnie Sahhar came on in relief of Phillips in the sixth and was able to limit any damage from Chaminade as the game went into extra innings.
With the game tied at 2-2, a lack of sunlight prevented the game from moving forward and had to be resumed Tuesday morning.
Keep battling is exactly what the Cougars did Tuesday, and in the top of the ninth inning Azusa Pacific was able to get on the board once again. Jaelah Burrell led off the inning with a walk and a Silversword error put runners on first and second for the Cougars with zero outs. Kinsey Erickson came through with a single to left field and a groundout to second base from Gay put Azusa Pacific ahead 3-2. Chaminade was able to get a runner on third, but Korstrom came on in relief of Sahhar and was able to escape the jam as Azusa Pacific picked up their first PacWest victory of the season.Â
