Five Provisionals Earned at Beach Opener

Azusa Pacific track & field competed at the Beach Opener in Long Beach, Calif. over the weekend.

LONG BEACH, Calif - Azusa Pacific track and field wrapped up their second outdoor meet of the season, earning five provisional times and marks in the Beach Opener hosted by Long Beach State. Jaylah Walker turned in an impressive performance, winning and earning an NCAA Div. II provisional standard in the 100 meter hurdle event with a time of 13.89, which she ranks 1st nationally in. She also turned in a 5th place finish of 11.92 in the 100 meter dash, which she currently ranks 4th in nationally. 

In the first day of competition on Friday, Logan Peyton and Molly Olson both earned NCAA Div. II provisional marks in the javelin throw. Peyton finished 3rd, earning a mark of 62.67m and Olson finished 5th with a mark of 43.15m. 

In the women's 4x100 relay, Trinity Miller, Kiayra Holmes, Ashanti Perkins and Walker currently ranks 4th nationally and they crossed the line at 46.48, earning an NCAA Div. II provisional standard and also finishing 3rd in the event. Jermel Jones II also earned an NCAA Div. II provisional mark in the long jump (25'2.5), which earned him a second place finish and also ranks him 1st nationally.

Among other events, Tyler Howard and Collin McMillan earned personal bests and second place finishes in their respective events. Howard finished the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.08, which he currently ranks 6th nationally, and McMillan crossed the line at 9:50.41 in the 3000 steeplechase, which he ranks 3rd nationally. 

More personal bests for the men's team came in by way of Nicolas Melendres, who ranks 2nd nationally in the 800 meter dash (1:52.57), and Leroy Kwateh in the 400 hurdles (57.07). 

For the women's team, Briseida Garcia Meza currently ranks 3rd nationally in the 800 meter and Kristilyn Hetherington turned in two personal best times of 2:21.09 in the 800 meter and 4:48.01 in the 1500. Justine Stecko also turned in another impressive long distance time of 10:33.98 in the 3000. 

In the field, Abby Keane earned a personal best in pole vault with a mark of 11'7.75 and a 3rd national rank. 

Up Next: Azusa Pacific track & field will send nine athletes to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Nationals happening Mar. 10th & 11th in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The next outdoor meet will take place on Sat. Mar. 18th at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Invitational at Point Loma.
