Top-10 Opponent Falls To Cougars In Azusa

Azusa Pacific shut out No. 10 Midwestern State 4-0 on Monday.

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific fought for a big home win on Monday afternoon, as the No. 33 ranked Cougars beat No. 10 Midwestern State by a 4-0 score. The Cougars are now 10-4 this season, and a perfect 8-0 on their home courts.

The energy was high among both teams from the get-go, with both sides in the hunt for the doubles point. Monday's No. 1 doubles match was a battle between two of the nation's best duos, as Midwestern State's top pairing of Germano Setti and Marcal Miret Avante are ranked No. 13, while Azusa Pacific's Leyton Bohren and Marko Nikoliuk are No. 15. It was Bohren and Nikoliuk who would set the tone, winning by a 6-2 score. Bohren and Nikoliuk are now 11-2 this season, and currently riding a seven-match winning streak.

After the Mustangs won 6-4 at No. 2, it was Elias Emilio Walter and Vili Bonev that came through for the Cougars with a 6-3 win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. It was the first time this season in which Walter and Bonev have played together.

Following up on his role in the doubles clinching win in doubles, Walter claimed the first singles victory of the day at No. 3. Walter beat Miret Avante in straight-sets (6-2, 6-3), which now extends his winning streak to six matches, all of which he has won in straight sets. Walter is currently ranked No. 73 in the country.

With Azusa Pacific up 2-0 overall, Miha Velicki returned from injury and captured another point for the Cougars, winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. In the first set, Velicki had fallen behind 3-0, but he roared back to steal the momentum away from Setti.

Leyton Bohren provided the match-clinching win for the Cougars at No. 2, where he and Charles Heffernan went the full three sets to decide a winner. Bohren rolled to a 6-0 first set win, but Heffernan fought back with a 6-3 second set. In the third, Bohren would regain the momentum and claim a 6-3 set victory. Bohren is now undefeated in his last three outings, and he is ranked No. 39 nationally.

Up Next: The Cougars will be in action on Wednesday, March 15, when Division I Navy visits Azusa for a 2:30 pm match.
