Ready For March

Azusa Pacific turned in a gritty road win to close out the regular season.

IRVINE, Calif. - Azusa Pacific wrapped up its regular season schedule with a 61-44 road win at Concordia on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the regular-season PacWest Champion Cougars improved their record to 23-4 overall, and 18-2 in conference play.

Molly Whitmore led the Cougars with her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and grabbing 12 rebounds, including four offensive boards. Kelly Heimburger had 12 points, and Paige Uyehara added 11 points.

How It Happened: After the first quarter of play, the Golden Eagles held a one-point advantage of 15-14. In the second quarter, the Cougar defense locked down CUI's offensive attack, as the Golden Eagles were held scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of the period, while Azusa Pacific went on a 14-0 run during that span to take a 28-15 lead with 4:08 to go before halftime. The Golden Eagles finished the second quarter with just six points scored, sending the Cougars into the locker room at the break with a 33-21 lead.

Azusa Pacific maintained its lead throughout the third quarter, and while CUI was able to get within single digits, the margin remained at eight or more. Entering the fourth quarter, the Cougars still held a lead of 12, at 44-32.

The Cougars closed the game out in the fourth quarter, as the lead never dropped below 12 points, while Azusa Pacific took its largest lead of the game at 19 points on several occasions down the stretch.

By The Numbers: Azusa Pacific was relentless on defense throughout the game, as the Cougars forced the Golden Eagles into 22 turnovers, which Azusa Pacific turned into 21 points. The Cougars finished at nearly 40% from the floor overall, shooting 23-for-58 overall, while CUI shot 35% (18-for-51) in the game. Both teams found offensive success inside, with each scoring 26 points in the paint.

Up Next: Azusa Pacific, which clinched its second consecutive regular season PacWest title last week, will be the top-seed at next week's PacWest Conference Tournament in Hawai'i.
