AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific edged Biola in a highly competitive dual meet on Saturday morning at Slauson Pool. The win secures 10 Cornerstone Cup points for the Cougars as this is the 10th time in the last 11 dual meets that the have beaten the Eagles.
Before the meet, six swimming & diving seniors were honored for the dedication they have given to the program over the years. Those seniors included Amanda Anderson, Melinda Davis, Delanie Gearing, Connor Herrin, Janelle Ng and Elaine Wong.Â
How it Happened: The diving portion of the meet took place at Biola on Friday evening and the Cougars were able to earn two second place finishes on the boards. In the one-meter dive, Allison Ferrer earned a final score of 238.70 and in the three-meter dive, Abby Keane finished with a combined score of 237.15.Â
To kick off the meet on Saturday, a second separated the first and second place finishing relay teams in the 400 Medley Relay. Biola took first with a time of 3:55.64 and the relay team of Marci Yanagawa, Delanie Gearing, Marcelina Halawczak and Montana White finished second with a time of 3:56.16.Â
In the 1000 Free, Aleena Herrera secured first with a time of 11:01.98 and Gearing took third with a time of 11:18.90. Then in the 200 Free, White swam to a first place finishing time of 1:51.90 and Kya Guikema secured third (1:57.80).
The Cougars secured their fourth and fifth first place finishes on the day in the 50 Free and 400 IM by way of Madeline Schultz and Herrera. Schultz earned a time of 24.54 in the 50 Free and Herrera earned a time of 4:33.54 in the 200 IM, followed by Anderson earning a second place finish, touching the wall at 4:35.88. In the 200 Fly, Victoria Alfaro earned a third place time of 2:11.92.Â
Azusa Pacific went on to sweep the top three spots in the 100 Free, when Ellie Sivesind finished first with a time of 53.99, Schultz grabbed second with a time of 54.00 and Hannah Swailes finished third, touching the wall at 54.36.Â
Yanagawa earned another first place finish for the Cougars in the 200 back with a time of 2:08.08, while Guikema and Herrera finished first and second in the 500 Free with times of 5:13.98 and 5:18.36.
Amanda Anderson then secured another first place finish for Azusa Pacific in the 200 Breast (2:24.51) and Gearing grabbed third (2:26.71), leading up to the final event of the day.
It all came down to the 400 Free relay to decide the winner of the dual meet and the Cougars pulled through as Sivesind, Swailes, Schultz and White finished on top with a time of 3:33.01, and the relay team of Herrin, Wong, Halawczak and Davina Sharma earned a fourth place finish (3:51.45).Â
The Cougars were able to edge the Eagles by a final score of 130-113, now having a 10-2 record over Biola at their home pool in Azusa.Â
