AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific picked up their first PacWest victory of the season in a 2-1 comeback win over Dominican.
Bethany Tee collected her second brace of the season, scoring both goals deep into the second half of play.Â
"We knew we had to get a win tonight. We had 10 shots with five on frame and two of them hit off the crossbar in the first half, so we had some really dangerous chances" said head coach
Brooke Lincoln. "I'm just extremely proud of the girls. Their fight and desire to want to win for one another is what makes this team so special." Lincoln continued, "This win only propels us forward. We just need chances and eventually they will fall."Â
How it Happened: Azusa Pacific opened the game with two corner kicks and a shot on goal from
Hailey Hilton in the first 10 minutes of play. In the 20th minute, Dominican found an opportunity to take a shot near the top of the box, and a Penguin player found just enough room over the leaping
Maddie Williams to find the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.Â
The Cougars continued their forward press, taking four more shots on goal and having another corner kick opportunity through the remainder of the first half, but were unable to find a goal.
The Cougars came out with an aggressive attack down field to start the second half and came extremely close to finding the equalizer in the 57th minute when
Avery Guiel's shot hit off the woodwork. It was a back and forth battle with each teams having a presence on their attacking half, but with just 12 minutes left in the game, Azusa Pacific found another corner kick opportunity. Tee's kick tailed into the top right corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1.Â
With five minutes remaining,
Nora Oldmark got fouled in Dominican's box, setting up Tee for a penalty kick opportunity. Tee executed, giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead, which they held on to for the remainder of the game, completing the comeback victory.Â
By the Numbers: This is the Cougars 10th victory over the Penguins in the last 11 seasons. Azusa Pacific collected 17 shots and six different players combined for eight on frame. The Cougars also had a season-high 10 corner kicks while limiting Dominican to just one through 90 minutes of play. Tee collected her sixth goal of the season, which ties for second in the conference, and she is also a perfect 3-for-3 in penalty kicks in her career. Lincoln utilized seven players off the bench tonight and
Gianna Ocello,
Katie Prado, Hilton and Williams each played the full 90 minutes.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific will return to the Cougar Soccer Complex this Monday, October 9th when they host Academy of Art. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and if you cannot attend, you can watch
