AZUSA, Calif. – Coming off of two consecutive ties, Azusa Pacific roared back into the win column with a 5-1 victory over Fresno Pacific Monday evening inside the Cougar Soccer Complex. Katie Prado, Rilee Bradbury, Katie O'Brien, Hailey Hilton and Avery Guiel each had a goal in the contest, while Bethany Tee, Nora Oldmark, Guiel and Hilton each collected an assist. Goalkeeper Maddie Williams also earned her sixth win of the season.
"I'm proud of the product that we put out tonight." said head coach Brooke Lincoln. "I thought there was good energy, I thought the ideas they had were good, so I'm proud of the focus and ability to get the job done."
How It Happened: Fresno Pacific had the first good opportunity of the night, hitting the crossbar just three minutes into the game. However, that would be their only attempt that was on target for over an hour. Just shy of the half-hour mark, the Cougars would make their move. The ball found its way to Guiel at the top right corner of the penalty box. Guiel dribbled towards the middle of the box, then laid off a pass to a waiting Prado, who slammed a shot from 18 yards out off the bottom of the crossbar and in for her second tally of the year.
The game would remain 1-0 entering the second half, but it would not stay that way for long as the Cougars turned up the pressure. In the 55th minute, Guiel sent a cross in that Aubrey Dunaway tipped onto the bar from point blank range, but Bradbury was able to intercept the ensuing outlet pass and unleashed a 30-yard missile that beat the keeper to the left post to double the advantage.Â
Just seven minutes later, it would be O'Brien who got in on the action, with the senior executing a give-and-go with Tee and chipping the ball over the keeper to make the score 3-0.
Fresno Pacific would pull one back with just under 15 minutes to play, but Azusa Pacific was not done yet. Hilton stole the ball on the left wing in the attacking third, then put together a give-and-go of her own with Oldmark, smashing in a shot from the left side of the box to regain the three-goal advantage with 10 minutes to play. Shortly thereafter, Guiel would tack on one of her own, running onto a pass over the top from Hilton and burying her chance in the bottom right corner of the net.
By the Numbers: The Cougars outshot the Sunbirds 19-3 on the evening, including 11-2 in shots on goal. In all, eight different Cougar players had a shot on target. Hilton became the 11th different Cougar to score a goal this season. Azusa Pacific is unbeaten in their last five games (3-0-2), during which they have outscored their opposition 17-5. It was the Cougars' third consecutive win against Fresno Pacific, and their 21st in 23 matchups this century, during which the Cougars have outscored the Sunbirds 76-12.
