ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Azusa Pacific was beat by top-seed Columbus State on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2022 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships in Florida. Columbus State won by a 4-0 final score.
On court No. 1 in doubles, Columbus State's duo of Alvaro Regelado and Javier Cueto Ramos claimed a 6-2 win. Columbus State would clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Columbus State closed out the match with straight-set singles wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5.
While the match went unfinished at No. 4, Elias Emilio Walter had won the first set 7-5, and he was tied 3-3 in the second against Christian Garay when the match ended.
"It is never easy to have the season end," said head coach Mark Bohren, "Columbus State was definitely the better team today, but man, what an amazing journey it was this season. I could not be more blessed to be their coach."
Azusa Pacific finishes its season with a 21-5 overall record, which is the Cougars' 7th season with 20 or more wins in the NCAA era. The Cougars won their second PacWest title in program history, defeating top-seed Hawai'i Pacific in the conference title game. The 2022 squad continued the program's streak of reaching the NCAA postseason in every season of NCAA eligibility, which began in 2015.
While the Cougars will lose several key players ahead of next season, including Ryan Nuno (All-PacWest First Team Doubles & Singles) and Sam Sippel (All-PacWest First Team Singles and and a two-time ITA All-American), the future is bright. Returning next season will be Leyton Bohren (two-time ITA All-American), Elias Emilio Walter (All-PacWest selection), Miha Velicki (All-PacWest selection), Cole Rassner, Caden Samkutty, Dylan Parsley, and Albertus du Plessis.
