AZUSA, Calif. — After splitting the first day of PacWest doubleheaders, Azusa Pacific swept Thursday's doubleheader with Hawaii Hilo after a 13-8 win in game one and a thrilling 11-10 walk-off win thanks to an RBI single from Tido Robles that sent his team home happy. With the wins, the Cougars improve to 32-14 and 21-7 in conference action.
Azusa Pacific tallied nine home runs between the pair of games as Will Stroud hit two in game one before tallying a third in the nightcap. George Christison smashed a pair of home runs in game one while Spencer Rasmussen tallied one in each game. Robles and Aaron Roose were the other two Cougars that hit home runs on the day.
Game One: Azusa Pacific 13, Hawaii Hilo 8
Azusa Pacific kickstarted the day with a two-run opposite-field home run from Christison, his first in over a month (March 25th). The Cougars would tack on another in the second with an RBI single from Brett Soria to make it 3-0.
After starter A.J. Woodall allowed a single run in the third, the offense was helped out again via the long ball, this time a three-run shot to right field off of Stroud's bat coming from the left side.Â
Another three-run homer an inning later from Christison, his second in the first four frames, upped the advantage to 9-2. Later in the inning, Rasmussen's 12th long ball of the year came with a runner on to increase the lead before Stroud's second homer of the game capped off a six-run inning to make it 12-2.
The Vulcans would tally another two runs against Woodall who tossed six strong frames allowing just two earned runs, garnering his seventh win of the season.
Hawaii Hilo would score six of the final seven runs in the game as Casey O'Laughlin's RBI single in the seventh is how the Cougars plated their 13th run. Casey Dykstra, who tallied a pair of hits and runs in the game, would close the game out in the ninth on the rubber getting a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of punchouts to secure the 13-8 win.Â

Game Two: Azusa Pacific 11, Hawaii Hilo 10 (8 innings)
Azusa Pacific jumped out of the gate in game two with three home runs with two outs in the first inning. Robles' solo shot upped his tally to 16 on the season to open the scoring before Rasmussen followed suit with a solo homer to right field to make it 2-0. Omar Lopez's single extended the inning for Stroud who hit another jack into left-center field, this time from the right side of the plate, to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead after one.
The Vulcans fought back with a trio of runs in the second to cut the deficit to one run. But, the Cougars scored three more in the fourth. O'Laughlin's RBI double scored the first of the frame before Roose's two-run home run to left field gave the Cougars' their second, four-run lead of the game, 7-3.
Hawaii Hilo once again answered back with a two-run home run of their own before scoring a run on an error to make it a one-run game once again, 7-6.
Roose knocked in another run to make it 8-6 heading into the seventh inning. In their last chance, the Vulcans scored the first run of the inning on a one-out RBI single to make it 8-7. Down to their final strike with the bases loaded and two outs, Jaryn Kanbara's bases-clearing double to right-center field gave the Vulcans their first lead of the game, 10-8.
But, Azusa Pacific refused to lose in the bottom of the seventh as the first three batters reached to start the frame. An RBI hit by a pitch from Stroud made it a one-run ballgame before Cade Marshman's RBI walk tied the game at 10-apiece. The Vulcans dealt out of a bases-loaded jam with an inning-ending double play to send the game to extra innings.
After getting the final out of the top of the seventh, Korey Shepard got a quick and clean 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning which included striking out the side to keep the game tied, 10-10.
Roose walked and stole second to lead off the eighth inning before another walk from Brett Soria set the stage for Robles. On the first pitch he saw, Robles' hard-hit groundball snuck through the middle infield for a base hit scoring Roose from second to win the game, 11-10.
By the Numbers: Robles' RBI single in the eighth inning of game two was the first walk-off hit for Azusa Pacific this season. The Cougars' nine home runs across the doubleheader is the second-highest this season behind the 11 they hit in a doubleheader sweep of Biola (March 25th). Roose extended his reached base streak to 25 games after a 3-for-5 day at the dish with three walks, four runs scored, and three RBI. Dykstra's reached base streak has now reached 12 games as he has increased his OPS to the second-highest on the team at 1.028. Robles' 16 HRs and 55 RBI lead the PacWest with just four games remaining in the regular season.

The first two on Tuesday, May 10th will be played at Biola beginning at 12:00 p.m. Before the Cougars will celebrate Senior Day on Wednesday, May 11th with first pitch of game one also scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
