GLENDORA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific water polo lost to No. 15 ranked University of Pacific Saturday morning by a final score of 16-7 which was played at Glendora high school. The Cougars are now 6-10 and 0-2 in GCC play.
Milena Guzmán Ortiz led Azusa Pacific with two goals and two assists while Maritza Ochoa also had a pair of goals in the loss.
How it Happened: The Tigers took the early lead and would win this one from wire-to-wire as they outscored the Cougars 5-1 in the first period. Guzmán Ortiz was the lone score of the period for Azusa Pacific scoring on a penalty shot.
Pacific would tally another four goals in the second as Guzmán Ortiz scored her second goal of the game before Kyra Kahahawai scored on a five-meter penalty to make it 9-3 at the half.
The Cougars fought back in the third period after trailing by as much as eight, Skylar Ford and Ochoa each scored to make it 12-5 after three periods.
After Pacific started the fourth with four unanswered goals, the Cougars tallied the game's final two, one by Ochoa the other by Alyssa Perez. For Perez, it was just the freshman's second goal of the season. The Cougars have now lost four of their last five to ranked opponents dropping this one 16-7.
Up Next: The Cougars will travel to San Diego State for another conference matchup next Friday, March 25th. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
