Battle Goes to the Ichabods

The Cougars fell to Washburn on Saturday afternoon by the score of 4-2.

AZUSA, Calif. - The Cougars hosted the Washburn Ichabods on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods took the match 4-3, in a close battle. The matchup served as a homecoming for Washburn head coach Kirby Ronning. Ronning served as an assistant coach to the Azusa Pacific men's and women's tennis teams from 2016-2020. 

Washburn got out to an early lead on Saturday by securing the doubles point. The matchup on court No. 1 was decided first, as the Ichabods won by the score of 6-4. The No. 3 doubles matchup followed, with the Ichabods securing the victory and the doubles point. The matchup on court No. 2 went unfinished.

The Ichabods extended their lead at the start of singles play by winning on court No. 3. Leyton Bohren gave the Cougars their first point of the day at No. 4. Bohren rolled to a straight set victory 6-1, 6-1. Sam Sippel followed suit and tied the match at 2-2, by claiming a 6-4, 6-3 win on court No. 2. The final two matches on the day went into the third set. Washburn secured the match victory on court No. 6, winning the tiebreak in the third set. That matchup ended 6-4, 2-6, 6-7. Play on court No. 1 went unfinished.

Up Next: The Cougars will look to bounce back in their next match as they host Hawai'i Hilo. The match is slated for Monday, March 14, at 2:00 pm.
