Clean Sweep

Azusa Pacific rolls past Fresno Pacific for a 7-0 win on Saturday.

AZUSA, Calif. - Less than 24 hours after its season-opening win, No. 12 Azusa Pacific was right back on the courts this afternoon, where the Cougars claimed a 7-0 shutout win over visiting Fresno Pacific.

It took all three doubles matches to decide which team would claim the doubles point, with the Cougars starting with a 6-1 win at No. 2 by Miha Velicki & Elias Emilio Walter, followed by a 6-4 Sunbird win in the No. 3 matchup. As a result, it was on the duo of Leyton Bohren & Ryan Nuno, the co-captains for Azusa Pacific, to earn a win at No. 1. The two delivered for the Cougars, defeating Sven Bangert & Martin Ramirez by a 6-4 decision, putting Azusa Pacific up 1-0 overall.

For the second-consecutive day, Walter wasted no time in claiming the first singles point for the Cougars, as the freshman rolled past opponent Martin Ramirez at No. 3 for a 6-0, 6-1 straight set victory. Miha Velicki also handled his match in quick fashion at No. 5, as he did not drop a single game in the two sets for the 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Paco Wortelman.

Sam Sippel secured the match for Azusa Pacific, as he also worked quickly against his opponent at No. 2 for a stress-free 6-0, 6-0 victory. In Sippel's three year career at Azusa Pacific, all but one of his singles victories have come in straight sets.

Leyton Bohren at No. 4 and Ryan Nuno at No. 1 also won in straight sets this afternoon, with both players finishing 6-3, 6-2.

Ian Lee, who was entered into the lineup at No. 6 shortly before the match, won the first set 7-6 (7-4), fell in the second 2-6, and then responded in the super tiebreaker with a 10-6 victory to secure his first victory of the season.

Azusa Pacific has now won its last 11 regular season matches against Division II opponents, dating back to the 2020 season.

Up Next: Next week, the Cougars will fly to Hawai'i for a pair of big matches. On Friday, February 11, Azusa Pacific will take on Hawai'i Pacific, followed by a matchup on Saturday, February 12 against Hawai'i Hilo. The matches will serve as a great opportunity for the Cougars, as Hawai'i Pacific ended Azusa Pacific's season last year in the final of the West Regional, and Hawai'i Hilo beat the Cougars in the PacWest Championship match just one week prior.
