Sea Lions Take Two

Azusa Pacific baseball lost a pair of games in Saturday’s doubleheader to Point Loma.

AZUSA, Calif. — After splitting a doubleheader on Friday, Azusa Pacific dropped two to Point Loma on Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-3 and 6-5. In both games, the Sea Lions came back to win in the late innings and take three of four from the Cougars.

How it Happened (Game 1): Azusa Pacific jumped out in front of the first game after a Cade Marshman solo home run in the third inning that put the Cougars up 1-0. A wild pitch would score another for Azusa Pacific in the fifth to double the lead. Starting pitcher Steven Silvas tossed 4.1 scoreless frames including a season-high 11 punchouts to keep the Cougars in front 2-0 in the early going.

Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, Point Loma's offense would tally two runs to tie it up before a three-run home run in the eighth would put the Sea Lions up for good.

The Cougars would get a solo shot from Aaron Roose in the ninth but would fall by a final score of 5-3.

How it Happened (Game 2): The Cougars once again got out in front of their opponents in the final game of the four-game series. George Christison drove in a run with an RBI single before Marshman's sacrifice fly later in the frame would make it 2-0 in favor of the Cougars.

The sophomore duo would do it again, this time in the fourth, as Christison tallied another RBI single before Marshman's two-run homer increased the Azusa Pacific lead to 5-1. It was Marshman's second home run of the day and his third this season (all at home).

Once again, after starting pitcher David Hays tossed six strong innings allowing just one run and striking out five, Point Loma would do damage late in this one. The Sea Lions put up a four-spot in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5-apiece before a sacrifice fly in the ninth would give them their first lead of the game, 6-5. The Cougars got one on but wouldn't score in the ninth falling for the third straight time to Point Loma.

Up Next: The Cougars will have next week off before traveling to the Bay Area to face Academy of Art on Friday, March 11th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will take place at the College of Alameda. To watch or follow along with live stats click here.
