Biography

THIS YEAR:  Senior David Hayes appears to be back at full strength, which will likely get the crafty southpaw back into the Cougar starting rotation ... Has displayed flashes of brilliance on the hill when healthy, and if his health can be sustained, could push for postseason honors ... Considered a very smart pitcher who does an outstanding job of mixing his fastball with his off-speed repertoire.  

2024:  As was the case the year before, was sidelined much of his 2024 junior season, appearing on the mound in 2 early-season contests before shutting down for the rest of the campaign ... Worked just 6.2 inning, surrendering 9 runs but also striking out 9 at the same time.

2023: Missed the first half of the season with injury before appearing in 15 games, starting 4 for the Cougars … Collected 4 hits with 3 RBIs and scored 2 runs … On the mound, threw 9.1 innings on the season, collecting a pair of wins and striking out 2 before being shut down with another injury … Threw a season-high 3 scoreless innings, striking out one in a victory over Western Oregon in the NCAA West Regional.

2022: Named All-PacWest third team utility player and earned All-PacWest Academic distinction ... Appeared in 38 games at the plate and on the mound … Offensively, was 18-for-62 at the plate (.290 avg.) ... Hit 3 doubles with 9 RBIs and 7 runs scored … On the mound, fashioned a record of 5-1 over 16 appearances with 15 starts … In 71 innings pitched,  struck out a team high 87 (fifth in PacWest), while holding opposing teams to a .230 batting average (fouth in PacWest) ... In a victory over Holy Names on March 18, struck out a season-high 10 batters faced over 6.1 innings pitched. 

2021: Appeared in 32 games, starting 16 ... Batted .273 with 4 home runs and 11 RBIs in 22 games in the field ... Hit a pair of solo home runs against Biola (April 9) ... Struck out 62 batters in 31 innings of work across 10 appearances ... Threw 4.2 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts in NCAA West Region playoffs against Northwest Nazarene (May 27).

CERRITOS: Appeared in 6 games on the mound during his 2020 freshman season at Cerritos College, recording a 3.60 ERA while striking out 47 batters in 35 total innings... Also batted .213 in 16 games, including three doubles.

HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated from St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif. in 2019 ... Played 3 varsity seasons under head coach Don Barbara... Was All-Trinity League first team as a 2019 senior after batting a team-high .386 while leading the team in RBIs, doubles, and runs scored ... Was 4-4 on the mound with a 2.20 ERA, striking out 63 in 51 innings of work over 9 games … Received all-league second team recognition as a junior, batting .342 with a 3-4 clip on the mound ... As a 2017 sophomore, helped lead the Braves to the Trinity title, batting .380 in 31 games with 9 doubles and 16 RBIs.

PERSONAL: Born on September 19, 2001, in Lynwood, Calif. ... Son of Christi and Darick Hays ... Has an older sister (Diora) ... His uncle, Greg Hays, was a standout pitcher at Long Beach State in the late 1980s and played in the Baltimore Orioles system ... Majoring in Business Management ... Hopes to go into medical sales after graduation ... Enjoys photography and golf.
