Cougars Win High Scoring Affair

In its first home game of the season, Azusa Pacific water polo took down Concordia 18-14.

COVINA, Calif. — The Azusa Pacific Cougars downed the Concordia University (Irvine) Eagles 18-14 behind big afternoons from junior Kyra Kahahawai and sophomore Milena Guzmán Ortiz.

Kahahawai led Saturday's goal-fest with five goals followed by Guzman Ortiz with four goals of her own. Sophomore Bri Erickson, sophomore Lauren Hoyle, freshman Maritza Ochoa, and freshman Maria Boix Pascual each supplied a pair of goals and freshman Shyanne Rainey rounded out the score total on the day.

How it Happened: Azusa Pacific took control early, converting the sprint for a goal from Erickson with 5:54 to play in the first. A penalty shot from Guzman Ortiz and back-to-back scores from Kahahawai knotted the score at 4-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The rest of the game followed suit as Boix Pascual found the back of the goal on Azusa Pacific's first possession of the second quarter and the team went on to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.

Up 9-7 at halftime, the Cougars broke open the score with goals from Hoyle and Boix Pascual, before Ochoa and Guzman Ortiz pushed the score to 13-10 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Five more goals came for Azusa Pacific in the fourth, including Hoyle's capstone with just under a minute to play. And although, Concordia-Irvine found the net with just a second to play, the Cougars ended up on top 18-14.

Up Next: Azusa Pacific heads to Claremont, Calif. March 4-5 for the Claremont Convergence Tournament. They kick off the weekend against UC San Diego at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, March 4, at the La Verne Aquatic Center.
