LA VERNE, Calif. — To open this weekend's Claremont Convergence tournament, Azusa Pacific water polo lost to No. 13 ranked UC San Diego by a final score of 14-5. The Cougars are now 3-4 overall and will take on Siena this evening.
How it Happened: The Tritons started strong with a trio of goals in the first quarter, including one on the power play. The Cougars' lone goal of the opening period was scored by southpaw Skylar Ford with under a minute to play in the quarter.
UC San Diego led 3-1 after one and tallied the first two goals of the second quarter to up their advantage to four. Milena Guzman Ortiz got on the scoresheet for the Cougars with 2:42 left in the half to cut the deficit to 5-2. Lauren Hoyle's goal with 20 seconds left in the half made it 6-3 but the Tritons scored another just before the buzzer sounded to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
The Cougars allowed seven more in the second half and scored just twice as Shyanne Rainey tallied a goal before Guzman Ortiz's second of the game came to begin the fourth quarter. The Cougars would eventually fall 14-5.
