OAKLAND, Calif. - No. 25 Azusa Pacific started off its PacWest schedule with a dominant 77-39 road win at Holy Names, improving its record to 6-2 overall (1-0 PacWest).
TyLee Manuel turned in a 21 point, nine rebound performance to lead the Cougars. Molly Whitmore scored 11 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Paige Uyehara added 10 points while dishing out six assists. Defensively, Amayah Kirkman had five steals, and Kelly Heimburger tallied four steals. 10 different Cougars scored in the win.
How It Happened: While the game was tied 15-15 at the end of first quarter, the Cougars took full control of the contest by out-scoring Holy Names by a 30-11 margin in the second. After Azusa Pacific missed all three of its three-point attempts in the first quarter, the Cougars went 4-for-7 from beyond-the-arc in the second, and the Cougars also held the Hawks to just 4-for-12 shooting from the floor in the period. At the halftime break, Azusa Pacific had forced Holy Names into 14 turnovers, which the Cougars scored 17 points off of those opportunities, and Azusa Pacific finished the first 20 minutes of action shooting nearly 60% overall (19-for-32), while the Hawks went 10-for-25 (40%). The Cougars entered the locker room with a 45-26 lead.
The Cougars suffocated the Hawks defensively in the third quarter, as Azusa Pacific held Holy Names scoreless for nearly eight minutes. A free throw by the Hawks made it 48-29 with 8:12 to go, and until there was just 20 seconds left in the third, Azusa Pacific scored 13 unanswered to grow its lead to 61-29. The Cougar defense limited Holy Names to just 2-for-15 shooting from the floor in the third, and the visitors entered the fourth quarter with a comfortable 61-31 advantage.
Azusa Pacific's lead remained at 30 or more for the entirety of the fourth quarter, and the game's 77-39 final score was the Cougars' largest lead of the contest at 38 points.
By The Numbers: The Cougars posted significant advantages in rebounding (42-28), points in the paint (40-18), points off turnovers (27-12), and shooting (45% - 30%). Azusa Pacific's 38 point win is its largest margin of victory this season, and its fourth victory by double-digits.
