SAN DIEGO, CALIF - Azusa Pacific men's soccer scored three goals against Point Loma today, but it was not enough for them to erase the early 4-0 deficit they originally faced, falling to the Sea Lions 4-3 in San Diego.
Gregoire Diep,
Andrew Gomez and
Elisha Burbridge led the late attack for Azusa Pacific and Gomez collected the first goal of his collegiate career.
How it Happened: The Cougars found themselves down early as Point Loma scored two goals in the first half to take an early 2-0 advantage heading into the second. The Sea Lions matched their first half momentum and found two more goals in the early minutes of the second half to go up 4-0 over the Cougars in the 68th minute.
The turning point came in the 71st, when
Jessie Echeverria and
Marco Astorga set up the Cougars leading goal scorer in Diep to tab Azusa Pacific's first goal of the game. Less than five minutes later, Gomez cut the deficit in half when
Luis Solis set up a cross for him to find the back post. Azusa Pacific continued their attack and in the 78th minute, Burbridge put a goal away to cut Point Loma's lead to 4-3.
Despite a late surge in goals, the comeback was not enough for the Cougars as the Sea Lions stopped the attack for the final 12. Azusa Pacific faced defeat by a final score of 4-3 over 90 minutes of play.
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific had 10 shots with five on goal and three corner kicks compared to Point Loma's two. Burbridge tabbed his first goal of the season and second of his career and Diep scored his fourth goal of the season and 19th in a Cougar uniform. The loss moves Azusa Pacific to 3-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 in PacWest play.
