Vulcans Slip Past Cougars in PacWest Title Bout

Hawai'i Hilo defeated Azusa Pacific in the PacWest Championship on Saturday afternoon in Arizona.

Box Score

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Azusa Pacific and Hawai'i Hilo met in the PacWest Championship on Saturday, and it was the Vulcans who emerged with the title following a 4-3 win.

The doubles portion of the contest was a quick affair. Jakob Schnaitter & Leyton Bohren took the No. 1 matchup 6-0, and then Sam Sippel & Ryan Nuno followed up with a 6-0 win of their own to give Azusa Pacific the 1-0 match lead.

After his role in clinching the doubles point, Nuno started things off for the Cougars in singles at No. 3. Nuno won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), allowing Azusa Pacific to grab the 2-0 advantage. The Vulcans would pick up a desperately needed point at No. 1, where Martin Soukal was able to beat Schnaitter 6-3, 6-3, and bring the match score to a 2-1 margin. Hawai'i Hilo would then even the match at 2-2, when the Vulcans' Joshua Liu won in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) over Ian Lee at No. 5, and then it took a 3-2 lead on a three-set win by Alessio Demichelis at No. 2 (def. Sam Sippel, (7-5, 3-6, 6-4).

Needing to keep the match alive for the Cougars, Cole Rassner delivered a three-set win at No. 6 (6-2, 5-7, 6-4) to even the match at 3-3.

The match-deciding point would be won on court No. 5, where Bohren and Luca Checchia were locked in a three-set battle. After Bohren won set one 7-6 (7-2), Checchia took the second frame 7-5 to force a third set. In the final set, it was Checchia who turned an early 2-0 deficit into an eventual 7-5 set win to deliver the Vulcans their first PacWest title in program history.
