SURPRISE, Ariz. - In the quarterfinal matchup of the PacWest Tournament, Azusa Pacific defeated Metro State by a score of 4-1.
The Cougars, who are now nationally ranked at No. 6, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the doubles matchups. Carolyn Brooner and Jacky Wagner started the Cougars off with a quick 6-0 victory at No. 2. The victory marks the second time on the season in which the pairing has won by a 6-0 margin. Courtney Page and Madison Kane followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 which claimed the doubles point for the Cougars.
For the second straight match, true Freshman Kane was the first to claim victory for the Cougars. She ended her match at No. 5 in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Wagner followed right behind Kane by winning her first set with a 6-0 victory as well. She then took the second set, 6-2. Metro State won the No. 4 matchup as that contest ended 6-2, 6-0. Anna Savchenko clinched the quarterfinal victory for the Cougars at No. 2. All three of the singles victories for Azusa Pacific on Thursday, came from 6-0 first set wins. As Savchenko claimed her contest by a score of 6-0, 6-4.
The No.1 seed Cougars now take on No. 4 Biola in a semifinal matchup of the PacWest Tournament. The match will begin at 9:00 AM on Friday, April 23. Azusa Pacific defeated Biola 5-2 on March 27 in the school's lone matchup on the 2021 season. The winner of Friday's matchup will advance to the PacWest Tournament championship on Saturday.
