Cougars Reach First-Ever PacWest Championship Match

Azusa Pacific will play in its first PacWest Championship match in program history, as the Cougars defeated Biola by a 4-0 final on Friday morning.

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 6 nationally and the top-seed at the PacWest Tournament this week, defeated No. 4-seed Biola by a 4-0 final in the semifinals on Friday morning. With the victory, the Cougars advance to the program's first-ever conference championship match in the NCAA era.

It was the All-PacWest Doubles Third Team duo of Courtney Page and Madison Kane who got the Cougars off to a good start. Playing at No. 3, Page & Kane jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, and would then take three of the next four games to win 6-2. On court two, Jacky Wagner and Carolyn Brooner used an early break to grab a 3-1 advantage over Biola's Brooke Fager and Lilly McNeil. While Fager and McNeil cut the deficit down to one game at 4-3, Wagner and Brooner would break the Eagles and ultimately clinch the doubles point for the Cougars with a 6-3 win.

Azusa Pacific carried the momentum right into singles, led by Wagner at No. 3. In roughly 30 minutes, Wagner won 6-0, 6-0, giving the Cougars a 2-0 match lead before all but one of the other five matchups had even finished their first set. Azusa Pacific then went up 3-0 with a straight-set victory by Kane at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0).

Needing one more win to advance to the PacWest Championship match, Azusa Pacific turned to Anna Savchenko, the All-PacWest Second Team selection. Playing at No. 2 against Fager, Savchenko jumped ahead early in the first set to get up 3-0, eventually winning 6-3. With a 3-2 lead for Savchenko in the second set, she locked in and won three of the next four games to clinch the semifinal victory for the Cougars.

"We did a great job of focusing and taking care of business in today's match," said head coach Mark Bohren, "It is an exciting opportunity in front of us with the conference championship tomorrow, and I am eager to see our team perform."

Up Next: The Cougars will play in their first-ever PacWest Championship match tomorrow (Saturday, April 24), as they take on No. 3-seed Hawai'i Pacific at 9:00 am in Surprise, Arizona. This will mark the second time in which the Cougars and Sharks have played this season, as Hawai'i Pacific visited Azusa just last week for a top-10 showdown. The Cougars were victorious by a 4-0 final. Hawai'i Pacific is currently the two-time defending PacWest Champions. Live scoring link will be available on the schedule page.
