AZUSA, Calif. - No. 9 Azusa Pacific secured an impressive victory over No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific in the final regular season match of the season. The Cougars head into the PacWest Conference Tournament with a 12-2 record and a five-match win streak.
The exciting day for Azusa Pacific began when the Cougars swept all of their doubles matchups. The first Cougar pairing to secure a victory was Jacky Wagner and Carolyn Brooner. The two played at the No. 2 spot and won by a score of 6-1. The double point was secured by the Cougars at No. 1 by Petra Ivankovic and Anna Savchenko. Their match ended in 6-2 fashion. The No. 3 contest went unfinished following Savchenko and Ivankovic's clinching victory.
The two top ten teams battled during singles, as Kane started it off for the Cougars at No. 5. After being down in the first set 5-3, she fought back by winning four straight games. That secured the first set 7-5, Kane then impressed in set two by winning 6-2. At No. 3, Wagner's first set also finished 7-5 in her favor. She then went on to sweep in the second set, 6-0. This put the Cougars up 3-0 with the hopes of clinching the match. No. 4 Brooner would seal the deal for Azusa Pacific. She took the first set 6-4 and had a comeback victory in set two. At the start of the second set, Brooner was down 6-3. She would battle back and eventually claim the victory in the tiebreak set, 7-6 (7-2). Following Brooner's victory the Cougars celebrated as they secured the senior day victory against No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific.
Four seniors were honored on Saturday as they played their final home match while at Azusa Pacific. The recognized seniors were Petra Ivankovic, Anna Savchenko, Jacky Wagner, and Courtney Page. Ivankovic and Page joined the program in Fall of 2017 while Savchenko and Wagner joined the Cougars in Fall of 2018. Throughout the three years the four have been together, they have totalled 34 wins thus far. The four were also a part of the Cougar team who won the West Region in 2019 in which they made an appearance at the NCAA Nationals. The Azusa Pacific Women's Tennis program will miss their leadership, hard work and dedication.
The Cougars finished their 2021 regular season undefeated against Division II opponents. Azusa Pacific will now travel to Surprise, Arizona for the PacWest Tournament. The tournament will take place from April 22 until April 24 as the Cougars will represent as the No. 1 seed.
