AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific has opened its season with two shutouts in two matches, posting a 6-0 win over Point Loma on Friday.
The Cougars were able to claim the doubles point with relative ease to open the match, with Carolyn Brooner and Jacky Wagner winning at no. 2 by a 6-2 score, and Courtney Page and Madison Kane teaming up for a 6-1 victory at no. 3. While the point was already secured for Azusa Pacific, the no. 1 doubles matchup turned out to be quite an exciting and entertaining battle between Point Loma's Gabi Armas & Angelique Friedrich and Azusa Pacific's Petra Ivankovic and Anna Savchenko. The two teams continued to trade momentum back-and-forth throughout, eventually heading into a tiebreak at 6-6. The tiebreak proved to be even more competitive than the first 12 sets, as it took 24 points to finally settle the winner, with Savchenko and Ivankovic earning the 7-6 win after a 13-11 tiebreak.
All five of the Cougars' victories in singles were won in two sets. Brooner finished first at no. 4 (6-1, 6-3), followed by Kane who took a 6-2, 6-3 win in the no. 5 matchup. Katia Betancourt claimed the match clinching point at no. 6, posting a 6-2, 6-2 win. Wagner went 6-2, 6-4 at no. 3, and Ivankovic earned the sixth and final point of the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory at no. 1.
"We started out very strong in doubles," said head coach Mark Bohren, "and we were able to carry that energy right into singles. It was great to see us sustain that momentum from start to finish, and that is something we will need to continue to do throughout the year."
The Cougars will now turn their attention towards their third match in three days, when they host Colorado Mesa tomorrow, starting at 9:00 am. Live scoring can be followed here.
