AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific opened its 2021 season with a 7-0 win against Chapman on Thursday afternoon.
The Cougars were ready to roll from the outset of the match, taking all three of the doubles matchups. Jacky Wagner and Carolyn Brooner made quick work of their opponents at no. 2, winning 6-0, followed by Courtney Page and Madison Kane at no. 3 who posted a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point and give Azusa Pacific the 1-0 lead. Petra Ivankovic and Anna Savchenko finished off the doubles portion of the day with a 6-3 victory at no. 1.
Following the dominant doubles performance, the Cougars maintained the momentum heading into singles and ultimately won each of the six matchups in two sets. Wagner was the first to win, finishing 6-0, 6-0 at no. 3, and she ended the day without a single set loss in either doubles or singles. Katia Betancourt gave the Cougars a 3-0 match lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at no. 6, and Brooner clinched it for Azusa Pacific at no. 4, winning 6-3, 6-0.
Kane, who made her collegiate debut in the match, picked up a victory at no. 5 (6-0, 6-1), and the day was finished out with Savchenko winning 6-0, 6-3 at no. 2 and Ivankovic claiming the no. 1 matchup by a 6-3, 6-2 final.
"Today was a great way to start the season," said head coach Mark Bohren, "It was great for the team to finally be back out on the courts and playing. Now, we turn our attention towards a very good Point Loma team."
The Cougars will be right back in action tomorrow at 2:30 pm, when they host PacWest rival Point Loma.
