AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific improved to 5-0 on Friday afternoon, winning in three sets (25-19, 25-11, 25-20) against Division III Redlands. 10 different Cougars recorded a kill in the contest, led by 11 from Katarina Radisic and a trio who had five each (Emma Svagdis, Delaney Dunham, Abby Hills). Maggie Nielsen had 23 assists. Azusa Pacific had nine service aces over three sets, with Radisic, Bailey Henington, Kyra Palmbush, and Selena Balderas each delivering two. Defensively, Bailey Henington finished with a team-high 10 digs, and Jaela Bernard tallied five total blocks.
Azusa Pacific opened the match by jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the first set. With the Cougars up 16-10, Redlands went on a 6-1 run to pull within a point at 17-16. The Cougars responded and closed out the first set with an 8-3 rally to take the 1-0 match lead.
While Redlands opened the second set with the first point, Azusa Pacific quickly grabbed the momentum, scoring nine unanswered to take a 9-1 lead. While the Bulldogs made up some ground by pulling within four at 10-6, it was the closest the visitors would come in the set. Later in the set, Azusa Pacific held an 18-10 advantage, and the Cougars closed it out with a 7-2 run to grab the commanding 2-0 match lead. Five of Azusa Pacific's final seven points in the second set came via a kill.
In the third set, Redlands opened by scoring the first three points. The lead was short lived for the Bulldogs, as the Cougars rattled off the next five straight points to jump up 5-3. While Redlands was able to tie the game on two occasions, it would not lead again in the third and final set. While Azusa Pacific would not trail after the early 3-0 deficit, it was anything but comfortable for the Cougars, as the margin remained around two to three points for most of the set. With the score 21-18, the Cougars scored four of the next six points to secure the match win.
After the quick one game hiatus from PacWest Southern California pod play, Azusa Pacific's next two games will be at Biola (Wednesday, March 31) and at Concordia (Tuesday, April 6). The Cougars are currently 2-0 in pod play.
