GLENDORA, Calif. – The 19
th-ranked Azusa Pacific water polo team found their temporary home digs at Glendora High School to be just what they needed to snap a two-game losing streak, defeating the 22
nd-ranked Santa Clara Broncos by a final of 20-11 Saturday afternoon with their largest offensive output of the season to date.
Brianna Erickson set the single-game program record for assists, as she had eight in the contest to go along with a goal.
How It Happened: The Cougars struck early, with
Hannah Bradley scoring on the team's first possession of the day. In all, Azusa Pacific got five goals from five different players en route to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. The Cougars continued to pour on the offense in the second quarter, stretching their lead to 9-3 at intermission. Milena Guzmán Ortiz had a hat trick in the first half, while
Brianna Erickson had five assists. In the second half, Azusa Pacific continued to find their rhythm offensively, scoring twice on the power play and adding a penalty goal by
Skylar Ford to push the advantage to eight. And the goals would continue to come in the fourth, as the Cougars would score six in the final frame, the most the Cougars have scored in a single quarter this season, to earn their second victory in conference play in 2021.
By the Numbers: The 20 goals the Cougars scored are the most they have registered in a conference game since a 20-5 victory over Concordia in April 2016. Eight different Cougars scored a goal, and all ten field players had at least one point. Guzman Ortiz had five of those goals, giving her a team-high 12 this season. Bradley finished with a hat trick of her own, while five other Cougars scored at least twice.
Britni Tisdale also had a four-point effort with two goals and two assists. The Cougars converted on five power play opportunities in the game in addition to the penalty goal in the third quarter. Azusa Pacific outshot the Broncos for the game 43-22. Defensively, all ten Cougar field players recorded at least one steal, totaling 24 takeaways in all.
Olivia Lott held the Broncos to three goals while making four saves in the first half before giving way to
Hannah Murray in goal.
