Men's Tennis Starts Season

Azusa Pacific took on a pair of NCAA Divsion I opponents on Saturday to open the 2021 season.

FRESNO, Calif. - Azusa Pacific opened its 2021 season at the Fresno State Invitational on Saturday where it played two matches. Both of the Cougars' opponents were NCAA Division I programs, as they started the day against Nevada, and then played host Fresno Pacific to finish the day off.

 

Nevada took the doubles point, winning two of the three matchups. Azusa Pacific was able to win the no. 2 match with Sam Sippel and Ryan Nuno teaming up to take a 6-1 victory. The Cougar pairing of Jakob Schnaitter and Leyton Bohren were within striking distance of taking the no. 1 doubles match, but eventually fell 7-5, and the Wolf Pack secured the point by taking the no. 3 matchup as well.

 

In singles, the Wolfpack were able to pick up three quick points with two-set wins at no. 4, no. 5, and no. 6.

 

Against Fresno State, the Cougars were able to pick up a win in one of the doubles matchups, with Bohren & Schnaitter posting a 6-4 victory at no. 1. The Bulldogs would still end up taking the doubles point and the 1-0 match lead however, winning both the no. 2 and no. 3 matches. 

 

In singles, Schnaitter was able to deliver a point for the Cougars, winning in a dominant 6-1, 6-1 fashion at no. 1 singles. While Fresno State clinched the match at 4-1, the two teams finished out all singles matchups and the overall final score was 5-2. The Cougars' second point came from Sam Sippel at no. 2, where he won 7-6, 6-3.
