Cougars Fall on Senior Night

Azusa Pacific women's soccer celebrated 10 seniors before its 2-1 loss to Point Loma Friday night.

AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific women's soccer lost a tight match Friday night on senior night by a score of 2-1 to Point Loma. The Cougars had 10 seniors honored before the game for their efforts in the brick and black over the course of their careers. In the game, the Cougars second half effort came up just short as Bethany Tee scored the team's only goal in the loss.

How it Happened: The No. 19 ranked Sea Lions came out aggressive in the first half. Before long the first goal of the game was scored in just the ninth minute. Off a free kick, Point Loma's Hailey Clifford had her original effort clang off the crossbar before her second effort volley found the back of the net.

The Cougars created some momentum in the 35th minute after a corner kick turned into a shot for Kayla Grisham just outside the box but it was saved to keep Point Loma ahead.

Directly after the save, the Sea Lions sent a ball over the top of the Cougars defense and an unfortunate miscommunication between Mackenzie Coleman and goalkeeper Bella Hara ended with Coleman's header in the back of her own net. After the unfortunate blunder, the Cougars trailed 2-0 at the half.

Azusa Pacific battled back in the second half, applying more pressure upon the Sea Lions midfield and back-four. A pair of shots from Katie Prado missed the frame early in the half before Brooke Bern forced the first save in the 59th minute. Ella Romero recorded another shot on goal in the 82nd minute but a quality save once again kept the Cougars off the board.

Then in the 89th minute Tee scored her fifth goal of the season on a breakaway set up by Randi Macadangdang in transition. The Cougars fought to the final whistle but couldn't come up with an equalizer losing 2-1, despite outshooting the Sea Lions 5-1 in the final 45 minutes.

Up Next: The Cougars host Fresno Pacific next Thursday, November 11th at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
