One Last Win at Home

Azusa Pacific women's soccer won its final home match Thursday evening defeating Fresno Pacific 4-1.

Azusa, Calif. – Azusa Pacific women's soccer beat the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific 4-1 Thursday evening in its last home match of the 2021 campaign. Maddy Morrison collected her eighth goal of the season, as she leads the Cougars in goals scored, and Katie Prado put away her first goal of the season.

How it Happened: In the 12th minute of action, the Cougars found themselves on the board via a goal by Morrison, with the help of a cross by Randi Macadangdang into the box. Fresno Pacific found the equalizer in the 24th minute when Tori De Leon placed a ball past Maddie Williams, which would be the Sunbirds only goal of the game. The Cougars could not regain momentum in the final minutes and headed into the half tied with Fresno Pacific 1-1.

Azusa Pacific dominated the second half,  collecting three goals via Bethany Tee, Ella Romero, and Prado. In the 53rd minute, Tee collected her sixth goal of the season with the help of Morrison, putting the Cougars up 2-1. After the goal, Azusa Pacific found their rhythm and in the 61st minute, Romero sent a ball past the jumping Sunbirds goalkeeper into the top shelf of the net for the Cougars to take a 3-1 advantage. Nearing the end of the half, Prado was set up perfectly and she took advantage from long range, collecting her first goal of the season and giving the Cougars 4-1 lead. This score would hold as Azusa Pacific finished the match, holding possession for a majority of the second half and pressuring the Sunbirds backline.

By the Numbers: 26 different Cougars saw action tonight, with four tallying goals. The Cougars outshot the Sunbirds 23 to 4 and held possession for 64% of the game. Azusa Pacific also collected five corner kicks and caused the Sunbirds to make six saves. The Cougars are ranked 2nd in the PacWest in goals scored heading into the final conference match of the season.
