HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- Azusa Pacific fell in five sets at Hawai'i Pacific on Tuesday night, and the Cougars now have an overall record of 16-6 (11-3 PacWest).
Annaka Jorgenson finished with a match-high 17 kills, while also adding 14 digs and two block assists defensively. Katarina Radisic also reached double-digits in kills and digs, finishing with 13 kills and 16 digs. Maggie Nielsen notched 31 assists, and Mina Andjelkovic added 24. Andjelkovic also tallied four block assists and five kills. Bailey Henington picked up 32 digs and delivered four service aces for the second time this season, and Delaney Dunham posted a game-high five block assists.
How it Happened: The Cougars opened the evening on a high note in the first set, overcoming a late 19-23 deficit by scoring six consecutive points on Radisic' service to take the set (25-23) and a 1-0 match lead. During the 6-0 stretch, Kyra Palmbush had two kills and Jorgenson added one of her own, while an ace from Radisic claimed the 25th point of the opening frame.
In the second set, the Cougars held a lead of 18-15, but the Sharks would tie the match at 1-1 with a 10-4 run to win the set by a score of 25-22.
While the Cougars were able to tie the score on five occasions in the third set, Azusa Pacific was unable to gain the lead. Hawai'i Pacific would ultimately take a 2-1 match lead with a 25-21 third set victory.
In the fourth set, Azusa Pacific sought to force a fifth and final set, and the Cougars were able to do just that by posting their highest team hitting percentage of the night (.350). Azusa Pacific opened with a 6-2 lead, and while the Sharks made a few runs to trim the margin down and even tie the score at 9-9, the Cougars would not trail in the set. Following a 25-19 fourth set win for the Cougars, all eyes turned toward the fifth and deciding set.
With the score tied at 7-7 in the fifth set, Hawai'i Pacific went on a 4-0 run to seize an 11-7 lead and the momentum. From that point on, the Cougars would draw no closer than two points, with the Sharks closing the book on the match with a 15-12 set victory.
By the Numbers: Hawai'i Pacific finished with the third-best hitting percentage by a Cougar opponent this season, combining for a team percentage of .223 (64 kills on 179 attempts), while Azusa Pacific wrapped up the match with a team hitting percentage of .209 (62 kills on 182 attempts). At the net, Azusa Pacific held a slight advantage in total blocks at 10-9. A strong spot for the Cougars came in the service game, where Azusa Pacific had seven service aces, which is tied for the second most aces in a single match for the Cougars this season.
