Swim & Dive Beats Biola in Dual Meet on Senior Day

Azusa Pacific women's swimming and diving defeated rival Biola 143-98 in Saturday's dual meet.

AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific women's swimming & diving defeated Biola as the team score finished with the Cougars ahead 143-98 in the team's first dual meet of the season. The Cougars honored eight swim & dive seniors before the meet this morning including, Amy Crayne, Heather Lee, R'Rian Ocampo, Karina Parker, Emily Rigsby, Melia Stout, McKenna Webster, and Holly Williams.

How it Happened: The Cougars started the morning with a big lead as Crayne, Stout, and Webster swept the diving portion of the event with top each finishing in the top three in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. Crayne won both, scoring a career-high 293.48 in the one-meter and scored 252.60 in the three-meter to record 18 points for her team. Webster finished in second in both the one-meter and three-meter with scores of 268.73 and 250.16 to claim eight more points for the Cougars. Webster and Crayne became the second and third Cougars to qualify for Nationals with scores of 255 or better at the one-meter designation. While Stout rounded out the top three with scores of 251.37 in the one-meter and 236.55 in the three-meter to record six more points in the meet for the Cougars. After just the diving portion of the meet the Cougars were ahead by a score of 32-4.

In the lanes, the Cougars started off with big points in the 100 free with a 1-2 finish from Delanie Gearing and Hannah Frey to up their advantage before freshman Montana White won both the 200 free and 100 free with times of 1:53.50 and 52.50 respectively.

Azusa Pacific's lead continued to grow thanks to another 1-2 finish by Amanda Anderson and Tessie Scavone in the 400 IM before Scavone placed second in the 500 free behind teammate and fellow captain Riley Smith who recorded a time of 5:18.23. Anderson and Gearing finished 2-3 in the 200 breast in the meet's most exciting finish as Biola's Grace Kling edged out Anderson by a tenth of a second. In the 200 fly, Rigsby then edged out a trio of Biola swimmers to get a first place finish in the event with a time of 2:12.76.

The Cougars capped off the victory in style with a 400 free relay win with a time of 3:37.32 behind Smith, White, Scavone, and Rigsby. It was the team's second 400 free relay win as they placed at the top in their opening meet at the Rodionoff Invitational.

Quotable: "We faced a talented Biola team today," head coach Tim Kyle said. "Credit to them for how well they competed. Today was amazing way to celebrate our seniors and their accomplishments with their time here at APU. Our Cougars preformed well enough on the boards and in the pool for us to be successful. This was another day for us to continue to to improve with our meet preparation and race readiness. We will continue to work hard to achieve as we progress through the season."

Up Next: Azusa Pacific swim & dive will travel up the coast to compete in the Bay Area Invitational next Saturday, October 30th. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m. at Mills College in Oakland, Calif.
