Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Reid Conant

It Takes Two to Tango

Azusa Pacific women's soccer beat Hawaii Pacific 2-0 on Tara Hansel and Rilee Bradbury's first goals of the season.

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Azusa Pacific women's soccer used a pair of goals from Tara Hansel and Rilee Bradbury to secure a 2-0 conference win over Hawaii Pacific Saturday afternoon. The Cougars broke through with the brace in the second half, Hansel scoring in the 67th minute before Bradbury put the game away in the 71st minute.

"Always good to see players getting their first goals of the season," head coach Brooke Lincoln said, "and we had two of those today."

How it Happened: Azusa Pacific came out on the front first in the first half, and dominating most of the play throughout. They recorded their first shot in the 4th minute before forcing the first save of the game in the 9th minute. Ella Romero recorded three shots in the first half but wasn't able to put any on target.

"We created a lot of chances the first 20 minutes (of the game)," Lincoln said, "(but) we didn't put the game away."

Perhaps the best chance in the first half came from forward Brooke Bern, who's shot clanged off the woodwork in the 40th minute. The Cougars outshot the Sharks in the first half 10-3 but only required their opponent's goalkeeper to make a pair of saves.

Coming off of a second-half goal that led to a victory over Hawaii Hilo, the Cougars looked to do the same after the intermission. Azusa Pacific was able to settle into the game and began to take control after the 65th minute mark.

The breakthrough finally came from a set piece in the 67th minute. After an Amy Bishop cross was partially cleared by the Sharks defense, the ball fell kindly to Bradbury who fired a shot into the back of the net to break the deadlock. The Cougars kept their foot on the gas scoring just four minutes apart thanks to a Hansel goal that was set up on Bern's first assist of the season.

"We controlled the play the last 25 minutes of the match," Lincoln said, "(A)nd finishing two within four minutes of each other showed the mindset of our players to put the game away."

The Cougars outshot the Sharks 16-4 in the contest and maintained 54% of the possession throughout the full match. Romero racked up a career-high six shots but was unable to score. While the two goal scorers each came off the bench and played significants minutes. Goalkeeper Bella Hara recorded three saves in the game.

Up Next: The Cougars are set to face Chaminade in Honolulu, Hawaii this coming Monday, October 4th. Kickoff is set for 10:00 a.m. (Hawaii Standard Time) / 1:00 p.m. (PDT). You can watch the game live here, or follow along with live stats here.
