Rule of Three

Azusa Pacific posted a dominant 86-59 road victory at Concordia on Friday, as the Cougars knocked down nine first half threes.

IRVINE, Calif. – Azusa Pacific knocked down nine first half three-pointers and picked up its second consecutive win on Friday, posting a commanding 86-59 road victory at Concordia. Four Cougars scored in double figures in the win, led by 16 points apiece from Ken West and Terrence Becvar, while Brennan Rymer and Mandrell Worthy contributed 12 points each. In addition to his scoring, Rymer tallied a game-high seven assists, and shared the team-high in rebounds with seven (West and Sasha French also pulled in seven boards).

How It Happened: Through nearly the first nine and a half minutes of action, it was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team taking a lead larger than one possession. That began to change at the 10:15 mark in the first half, when Ben Avera knocked down a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 20-15 lead. Though Concordia responded with a basket on its next possession to make it 20-17, the visitors went on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to surge ahead 32-17 with 5:07 left before halftime. Azusa Pacific would continue to grow its lead over the remainder of the first half, eventually taking a 48-30 advantage into the break. Through the first 20 minutes of action, the Cougars hit nine of 15 attempts from beyond-the-arc (60%), with both Avera and Becvar hitting three triples. While the Cougars cooled off from deep in the second half (3-for-10), they still shot 46% from the floor overall and held the Eagles to just 33% shooting, including 0-for-7 from three. The Eagles would not get within 14 points over the entirety of the second half, and Azusa Pacific took its largest lead of the night at 85-55 with 1:45 remaining in the game.

Turning Point: The Eagles started the second half on a quick 4-0 run in the first minute of action, seeking any sort of momentum that could get them back in the game. The Cougars not only responded with a 6-0 run of their own over the next minute and a half, but Azusa Pacific continued to pull away by growing a 48-34 lead at the 18:52 mark, into a 61-41 advantage with 13:04 remaining. From that point on, Concordia would draw no closer than 20 points.

By the Numbers: The Cougars shot 54% (30-for-38) overall from the floor, and finished 48% (12-for-25) from deep. Defensively, Azusa Pacific limited the Eagles to 38% shooting (24-for-63), and just 1-for-10 from beyond-the-arc. On the glass, Azusa Pacific posted a dominant rebounding margin of 48-28 over Concordia. 15 of those boards were on the offensive end for the Cougars, which resulted in 20 second chance points. The reserves for the Cougars also provided a huge spark all game, as Becvar and Bryce Sloan combined for 24 of Azusa Pacific's 31 bench points.

Up Next: The Cougars (2-1) will look to repeat their dominant performance tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 30), as the Eagles travel to Azusa for a 4:30 pm start time. The game will be live streamed for free on Cougars All-Access.
