Matt Micek, an assistant coach for Azusa Pacific men's basketball, has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the program. Micek was named one of 50 impactful assistant coaches in NCAA Division II men's basketball by Silver Waves Media.
Micek, who has spent the last six seasons with the Cougars, specializes in skill development. Before, during, and after practice, he works individually, as well as in small groups with players, implementing specific workouts and techniques geared towards strengthening a player's ability to be successful at their respective position and within the entire system as a whole. On gamedays, Micek facilitates pre-game workouts for players who are seeking to find their rhythm prior to tip-off. While Micek has been with Azusa Pacific the last six years, he has over 20 years of experience in coaching and skill development, which has allowed him to build the reputation for being one of the top skill development coaches on the West Coast.
In addition to the player development responsibilities with the Cougars, Micek also helps in opponent scouting through film breakdown, and recruiting.
"Coach Micek loves the game of basketball and it shows in how hard he works," said Azusa Pacific head coach Peter Bond, "he is constantly helping players improve, evaluating recruits, and setting up our players and team for success. He has been around the game and around great basketball minds for a long time, and so we all value the knowledge he brings to the program."
Since Micek joined the Cougar coaching staff in 2014-15, Azusa Pacific has posted a record of 132-58 (.695), winning three PacWest titles and reaching the NCAA Division II Tournament four times, including a West Region Championship during his first season. Micek has helped develop two All-Americans, as well as 16 All-PacWest selections over his six seasons.
Prior to his arrival to Azusa Pacific, Micek had coached collegiately at San Jose Christian College, where he was the head coach and posted a 21-11 record while guiding his team to the NSJCAA Final Four, and had been an assistant coach at Ventura College, Biola, Concordia, and Cal Poly Pomona.
The list of 50 impactful assistant coaches was developed by Silver Waves Media after months of research and consulting with Athletic Directors, Presidents, search firms, and numerous influencers within the basketball community.
