COLUMBUS, Georgia – Azusa Pacific fell in the finale of its trip to Georgia on Saturday, as #14 Flagler College picked up a 4-3 win.
Flagler won two of three in doubles to start the day, which gave the Saints a 1-0 contest lead. Azusa Pacific lost the #2 and #3 matchups, but Sam Sippel and Ethan Smith were able to take a 6-2 victory at #3. Sippel and Smith have now played three consecutive matches as doubles partners, and the duo is 2-1 so far.
While the Cougars entered singles down 1-0, they were able to take a 2-1 lead after picking up two-set victories from Jakob Schnaitter at #1 (6-2, 6-4), and Sippel at #2 (6-4, 6-3). Both Schnaitter and Sippel are undefeated in singles so far this season. Flagler would respond to the sudden deficit by winning the #3 and #4 matches to take the overall lead back at 3-2. The Saints would clinch the match off of a three-set win at #5, with Felipe Carvalho holding off Jesse Haas who went down 0-1 after a 4-6 loss in set one, but forced a third set with a 6-4 victory. In the third set, Carvalho won 6-3. Dillon Barnard added the third point of the day for the Cougars, earning a three-set win at #6 (6-2, 4-6, 6-4).
The Cougars are 6-3 overall, and will now play 10 consecutive matches on their home courts in Azusa. Azusa Pacific's next match is on Saturday, March 14 against Colorado Mesa at 2:30 p.m. Â Â
