SEATTLE, Wash. -- Azusa Pacific men's soccer kept its undefeated season alive with another road victory in the Pacific Northwest on Saturday night, as the Cougars defeated Seattle Pacific 2-0. Junior forward James Ndubueze scored twice in the second half to ensure the win for the No. 3 ranked Cougars. This was the Cougars' second clean sheet of the season and their first since the opening game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Cougars were unable to score in the first half even though they outshot Seattle Pacific 13-2 through the first 45 minutes of action. Luckily, it didn't take long for Azusa Pacific to find the back of the net in the second half. In the 49th minute, the goal started on a counterattack for the Cougars. Senior forward Arturo Astorga sprinted past a few defenders in transition before finding David Kwinn who laid it off to Carlos Grenados who then found Ndubueze in behind the defense. Ndubueze stopped used a hesitation move before his shot beat the goalkeeper to the near post to break the deadlock.
The second goal for the Cougars came late in the game in the 86th minute. It started with Ndubueze in transition who found junior midfielder Danillo Dias just outside the box on the right side of the goal. Dias then passed to Astorga who drew two defenders to him inside the box before giving it right back to Dias who continued his run to the penalty spot. Instead of Dias shooting into traffic, he slipped a pass to the back post where Ndubueze stood for an easy tap-in goal.Â
The Cougars continue to prove their class in the attacking end scoring two goals in the game which they have now done in all seven games to start the season. Ndubueze scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season in the game which a team-high. Among other standouts, David Kwinn had a total of six shots in the game as two of them were on goal. Astorga had four shots and half of them were on goal.
The Cougars will now enter PacWest conference play with an overall record of 7-0 and will take on Academy of Art on Thursday, October 3rd. Kickoff is set for 1pm in the Bay Area up in San Francisco.
