OAKLAND, Calif. – Azusa Pacific defeated Holy Names 3-0 on Friday night, as the Cougars took command of the match in the second and third sets.
In what proved to be the lone competitive set of the evening, the Cougars were challenged to start the match in set one. Azusa Pacific did not have a lead larger than four points in the first set, as the Hawks stayed in striking distance and halted any large runs by the Cougars. Azusa Pacific was paced by senior
Julianne Miller in set one, as Miller tallied nine kills. The Cougars grabbed a 1-0 match lead when freshman
Annaka Jorgenson recorded her second kill of the game to make the score 25-22 to end the first set.
In the second and third sets, Azusa Pacific was dominant. In the second set, the Cougars held a 12-8 lead when they went on a 12-0 run to push the advantage up to 24-8. Jorgenson once again put the finishing touch on a set win for the Cougars, as she recorded the final kill to take a 2-0 match lead.
Holy Names trailed the Cougars 9-8 in the third set, before Azusa Pacific took control with a 16-5 run to close out the match 25-13. Junior
Abby Hills finished off the match with a kill.
Statistically, the Cougars were led by Miller (14 kills), senior
Bailey Henington (27 digs/9.0 digs per set), and junior
Mina Andjelkovic (31 assists).
