Cougars Put on an Art Show

Azusa Pacific swept Academy of Art 3-0 on Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.-- Azusa Pacific posted its third straight PacWest sweep Saturday afternoon after downing Academy of Art on the road, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-12). With the win, the Cougars improve 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in PacWest play.

Several Cougars showed outstanding play. Freshman Annaka Jorgenson recorded 11 kills and 11 digs while sophomore Katarina Radisic tallied in 10 kills and seven digs. Julianne Miller collected eight kills and four blocks while Aliyah Morrison added five blocks respectively.

The Cougars made quick work of the Urban Knights with three kills by Jorgenson to help Azusa Pacific jump out to an early 9-2 run in the first set. Academy of Art was never able to recover as the Cougars led by as much as eleven points for most of the set. Azusa Pacific grabbed a 1-0 match lead when Morrison closed out the first set with a block.

In the second and third sets, the Cougars remained dominant. In the second frame, the two teams battled in the beginning until two kills from junior Amy Hinnant (assisted by freshman Maggie Nielsen) and two service attacks by the Urban Knights advanced the Cougars to a four-point lead, at 13-9. Azusa Pacific used a set-closing run of 6-1 in which two of those points came via kills from senior Sara Wagenveld.

In the closing set, Jorgenson and Miller came out with the hot hand to combine for a total of six kills. Radisic tallied in six of her ten kills in the frame to help extend the Cougars lead up to 23-9. Azusa Pacific never looked back, as sophomore Emma Svagdis closed out the match with a kill (assisted by junior Mina Andjelkovic).
