CHICO, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific and number 24th ranked Chico State played to a 0-0 tie, as both teams were kept of the scoreboard for 110 minutes of action on Thursday evening. For the Cougars, it is the second time which they have kept a clean sheet this season, as sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Kovisto racked up a career high nine saves in the game. The Cougars are now 2-1-1 through the first four games of the season.
Tonight was Kovisto's fourth straight start of the season. Coming into the game, Kovisto had six saves in three games, including a game-saving effort on a penatly kick against Cal State San Marcos this week, before picking up nine tonight to push her season total to 15 saves. "Jen (Kovisto) had a brilliant game," head coach Brooke Lincoln said, "She kept us in the match all night as she made save after save for us."
This was the second consecutive game that Azusa Pacific has faced a ranked opponent, as the the Cougars lost a tough 3-2 decision to then-#3 UC San Diego, now #1 in the most recent poll, last weekend in a back-and-forth battle.
Tonight, the Cougars were outshot 22 to 13 overall in the match but finished strong with three shots in the final overtime period compared to Chico State's one shot. Azusa Pacific has now been away from home for two of the four games to start the season and have yet to be defeated on the road (1-0-1).
Sophomore Abi Hume and junior Randi Macadangdang led the Cougars with three shots apiece, with two of Hume's shots were on goal. Among other Cougars, junior Maddy Morrison and freshman Katie Prado both started for the first time in their Azusa Pacific careers.
The Cougars will end their two-game road trip with a visit to San Francisco State on Saturday, September 21 for a 12:00 p.m. start time in San Francisco.
